The next morning, I woke up early, excited as my fiancé Deacon was due back after being away from the island for the last two weeks. After his brother had passed Deacon went home to spend some time with his family. His boat was getting in early, so we’d arranged for him to meet me at the house. I’d just finished making breakfast when I heard him open the front door.

“He’s back!” Artemis called from the hallway. Before Deacon could even make it into the kitchen I ran into the hallway and jumped on him, smothering him in a hug that was uncharacteristic of me.

“Hey!” he said, catching me with a laugh as he stumbled back a couple of steps. He hugged me back and set me down. “I take it you did miss me then?”

“Just a little bit. I’ve made you breakfast if you’re hungry. How as your trip?”

“It was… well I feel better than when I left. We’re all coping with it. I think I’m probably going back to visit mom and dad a bit more often now, maybe once a month or so. Breakfast smells amazing by the way, I’m starving. What have you made?”

“Come see!”

Twenty minutes later we were at the tail end of breakfast, my grand platter of eggs, bacon, pancakes, toast, and other items all suitably demolished. Deacon sat back in his chair, loosened his belt and let out a satisfied sigh as he sipped his coffee. “It’s good to be back. So, what have you been up to?”

I caught Deacon up to speed with everything that had happened so far since he’d left the island, from my short stint as a pet detective to the business with the Brewdocks, the Egyptians artifacts, and the cult I’d dismantled yesterday.

“Oh, there’s also this other thing, this podcaster is staying in the guest room.”

“Another guest? Crikey,” Deacon said, pulling a face.

“I know, I know, but this one is fairly normal. She’s paying me to be her guide of the island, she actually put me onto an old cold case, I wanted to ask you about it actually.”

“Which one?”

“Dec King, the hardware magnate that supposedly killed his wife.”

“Ah yeah,” Deacon said and nodded his head in recognition. “I worked that case. Guy got off on a technicality, right? As far as I recalled all signs pointed to him doing it. You’re trying to prove his innocence?”

“The guy put up a six-figure reward to clear his name, I figured it was worth looking at.”

“I see, so what conclusions have you drawn so far?” Deacon asked.

“To be completely honest… right now I think he did it. There was really only one way into that house, using the garage-door opener, and Dec was the only person to have an opener. His wife had one, but hers was broken.”

“Exactly,” Deacon said. “It’s kind of an open and shut case to be honest. No offense sweetie, but I think you might be wasting your time with this one.”

“Yeah…” I sighed glumly. “Well, there are plenty of other things going on to keep me busy.
